The Role

As a contractor - Senior Design Engineer you will be responsible for the design of a wide range of complex transmission and driveline components.

The Senior Design Engineer will become a member of the design team and will work closely with the Chief Designer to take ownership of a particular mechanical design system as identified by the Chief Designer.

Key Responsibilities

• The mechanical design of components through concept, definitive and detail design phases.
• Carries out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, basic stress calculations, FMEA’s, 2D layouts, 2D detailing, Tolerance stacks as required. Agreeing the design approach with the project Chief or Lead Designer.
• Responsible for the following engineering activities:

o   System and component specifications and that design meets the requirements.

o   Creation of 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase.

o   Creation of assembly drawings and bill of materials.

o   Carry out design change requests as per process and in a timely manner.

o   Fit and function of their responsible parts or system and their interaction with other systems.

o   Layout drawings are up to date.

o   Creation of component or system design plans.

o   Meeting design timing plans on assigned tasks.

• Work closely with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly.
• Responsible for reporting progress of all assigned tasks to the project management teams, chief designer or engineering manager.
• Creation of technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects.
• Highlights all mechanical technical risks to the chief designer or engineering manager.
• Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews.
• If required, generates minutes from design reviews.
• Keeps up to date with and dissemination of:

o   latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards.

o   latest technology trends.

o   latest developments in design tools.

• Liaise with suppliers and other Ricardo departments to ensure the required information is available when needed and customer requests are dealt with in a timely manner
• Liaise directly with the customer as required.
• Ensures design files and documentation are kept up to date, and stored in accordance with department procedures.

Key Skills and Experience

• Degree (Bachelor or Masters) in mechanical engineering or similar field or with equivalent experience.
• Long term experience as a Design Engineer.
• Broad range of mechanical design knowledge with experience in Transmission and Driveline design.
• Preferred experience with any of Cast housings and casings, Transfer cases, Gears, Shafts, Driveshafts, HCU's, Axles, etc.
• Experienced user of CATIA V5.
• PLM experience, PTC Windchill referred.
• Familiarity of technical specifications.
• Ability to understand and produce technical drawings to high standard with GD&T competency.
• Able to produce designs to specified deadlines and achieves required timescales.
• Confident proactive character, ability to take the lead in challenging situations.
• Good communication skills, dealing with other employees, external clients & suppliers.
